MY KOREAN DAYS
My trip to Pusan(Busan), South Korea- like any other person travelling abroad for the first time, I was filled with excitement and thrill of this new journey I had embarked upon. I remember every moment from when I landed at Gimhae International Airport, and my travel to Kyungsung University (my new school!). I looked through the window realizing how far I was from my home in India, but I experienced an unusual bliss when I had my first view of the amazing Pusan, in fact the “DYNAMIC BUSAN”. That 1-hour journey from the airport was more restless than the 12 hours from India. Finally, when I reached Kyungsung University the excitement in me to see my new school, it’s premises, the new friends, the culture etc. got a sudden shock when I stepped out of the car. My mind literally froze, and I was shivering like anything under the countless number of jackets I had on. I had never experienced such low temperatures before & it was here I got to witness my first snowfall. I was totally naive about this amazing country South Korea, except for knowing about the conflicts with its other half. As with human nature I had a lot prejudices, but all those ended within no time. Busan is a beautiful place with mountains and beaches perched in background of many well modernized towns and cities. The first food I tasted here was a burger from the Korea’s own “Lotteria” it was so very delicious. These first impressions about Korean food set my expectations very high, though I must admit food turned out to be my biggest barrier here for me. ’Kimchi’ the traditional Korean food was of high expectations in my mind, but unfortunately it did not savor my taste buds but I tasted some delicious mouthwatering Koreans dishes like Ramen, Samgyopsal etc. I love travelling and exploring places, and Korea is just perfect for this, though the lack of English speaking population and sign boards in Korean made it difficult for me to navigate around the places. The people in Korea are very warm and friendly; they have been very helpful in giving us directions using a combination of Korean words and sign language (Google map & translator was particularly helpful here). Busan is the best place for trekking and beaches in South Korea, in fact to me it is the most beautiful place in South Korea. Also the most interesting people here were the Ajumma’s and Ajushi’s who are ubiquitous all over Korea. They are ever present on the streets, markets, subways, even in the public gym etc. They seemed to be very healthy and energetic people. Every elderly person I interacted with was very kind to me. In class although I couldn’t make many Koreans friends due to the language barrier, I was very lucky to be invited to one of my Korean friend’s home. That was one of the most unforgettable events during my stay here, I was literally stunned by their hospitality towards me. The more I interacted with people here, the more I truly fell in love with their extremely polite and kind nature. As days passed I learnt a lot about Korea and its own unique culture. Perhaps the most shocking of it was that more than 40% of the population here didn’t follow any religion, which is very unlike my country which is incredibly religious. Spring in Korea is really awesome, Busan gets withered with cherry blossoms making the entire place look magical. And there are a lot of festivals, K pop concerts that happen here. And I was lucky enough to experience many festivals like the cherry blossom festival, sand festival, fringe festival, Eobang festival, lantern festival, Indian Holi festival etc. They gave me many fun filled moments which I would cherish forever. From my experience of a short period of 4 months, Korea seems to be a country of contrasts. It’s a beautiful and peaceful country with tense borders, it’s a country of tradition and culture, but also a fast paced modern society, which embraces western values. I was astonished by how fast, easy and convenient life is here. As I am nearing to the days of ‘Goodbyes’, I am reminiscing over all the time I spent here, the people I met, and the memories I made. Lakhs of pictures were taken, each worth a thousand words, each awakening a million feelings and countless memories, which will remain as priceless treasure in my heart forever.
